Equality in All Things-Including Binge Drinking. Girls Set To Overtake Boys When It Comes To Drinking Alcohol.
Just under 50% of girls, aged 11-15 drink alcohol compared to 52% of boys. These are the results of a 2009 survey of 8000 boys and girls from 264 schools. Compared to previous surveys if this trend continues girls are set to overtake boys soon.
According to Government statistics girls aged under 15 are consuming an average of 11.3 units of alcohol compared to 11.9 units for an average male drinker aged 11-15. This equates to six medium glasses of wine or 5 pints of beer and is the first time girls have been less than 0.5% behind boys.
Not that they are likely to be drinking wine or beer. Most teenagers instead choose to drink spirits and ready mixed alcopops according to the NHS.
An article in the Daily Telegraph suggests that the reasons for this are glamorous advertising and the cheap price of alcohol in supermarkets. I think this is only part of the problem and would suggest that lack of things to do, places to go, peer pressure and celebrity behaviour also play a role. The media are also not entirely blameless even in this article the reporter refers to the “ladette” a term coined by the media and implying someone who is cool and trendy.
Don Shenker, Chief Executive of the charity Alcohol Concern says that girls drinking behaviour is influenced by “images, messages and role models, including the way adults drink, which accepts a casual acceptance of drunkenness.”
But once again we seem to be spending an awful lot of time and energy pointing the finger. Let’s just accept that society as a whole has a role to play in the behaviour of teenagers and therefore has a role to play in helping to change this behaviour. Changes need to be made to the following areas:-
- Young people need to have somewhere to go in the evenings. If they are left hanging around street corners they will indulge in drink if nothing more than for the “beer jacket” it offers to help keep them warm.
- Young people need to have something to do. What’s the saying? “The devil makes work for idle hands.”
- We need to ensure teenagers have a high level of self-esteem and a good body-image. It isn’t cool to be a drunk “ladette” unable to walk home and being sick in the street.
I’m not disputing that advertising and the cost of alcohol play a role in the girl’s behaviour but there should be a desire not to be drink alcohol or be drunk has to come from within.
All too often articles about binge drinking, like the one in the Telegraph are accompanied by statements such as; “the NHS Information Centre disclosed that the number of young people having to be treated in hospital for serious liver disease has risen by more than 50 per cent in the last decade.”
I personally don’t believe that sort of statistic is going to have any effect on the vast majority of teenagers – you only need to look at the drinking habits of medical students to see that the human mind is programmed to believe “it’ll never happen to me. “but all it is doing, is destroying the brain cells, which end up dead sells, and less brain cells, causes memory loss.
Instead an approach such as “you won’t be able to go to XXX (some fantastic activity planned by the local authority for teenagers) on Saturday morning if you’ve got a hangover” might just make them think twice about having a drinking session on Friday night.
